ENG | FIN Entering a new market is not easy, this time it was practically a run and the job could be described as risky and somewhat complicated to say the least. Did we always know what we were doing? No. Was energy sometimes spent on the wrong things? Yes. Did you sometimes run into a stone wall or two? Yes. Sales was a hard and rocky road and at one point, in the dark hours of the night, I thought " Abort the bloody mission". But in the morning I climbed out of bed, flicked open the laptop, set the coffeemaker spinning and got down to business as usual. I am happy to say that persistence was eventually rewarded. If only these budgets for my obsessions were on a human level, I could get through them with less headache and without too much heart ache. Superstars' fees are in the same range as the price of a new sports car, and yes, one could get a flat for that amount. Sometimes I wonder if this makes any sense. Probably not to many people, but still, this cocktail called Kipinä, an extremely exciting journey and the vision of the future, always gets the adrenaline flowing and the excitement sky high! I can see myself, as an old hardened entrepreneur in the future, with a touch of impatience and grumpiness at times. In Finland we have an effective stress-relieving word called "perkele" and it's repeated frequently and strongly. When things get tough, there is no point in holding back emotions. However, it seems that Finnish sisu is the way to happiness. You can never do too much marketing, but you have to do it with the resources you have. There is more power in a community than in the marketing budget of any single company. You don't build local awareness overnight, but you take thoughtful steps forward and co-operate with the partner companies. Create building blocks with business value from which you can build new bridges. It's important to build on a strong foundation to create something that benefits both businesses and the community. We want to have something that lasts, not a quick lottery win with no economic basis or future. The wise thing to do is to keep your feet on the ground in financial management. As my friend Jari and I were saying the other day, it really is a endurance sport, a marathon, not a sprint. Although Finland is a country of thousands of lakes and seminars, there is only one Kipinä and the concept will continue to be shaped thoughtfully and according to its resources. The aim is to have a healthy base for the business. In a small business, the importance of keeping up with the pace and valuing moderation is high; something has been learned from the excessive pace of the past. In long-distance running, it's not the distance that kills, it's the pace. Listen, watch and analyse, change the things that don't work, pick up what moves you forward. How to find the reasonable in the unreasonable, that's the art when you're not stepping into a pre-funded and risk-free table. This year, we really did get more than blood, sweat and tears, including several, great new partners and wonderful new friends. The biggest thank you this year goes to the partners, you were there to make the first Kipinä Levi event happen and will not be forgotten! We have received many thanks, enthusiasm, valuable information and feedback, which will help us plan the future. It's great to see that the Kipinä community and crew are bursting with new ideas to implement next year. Together we develop the event and culture, never alone. It has been wonderful to hear how much people are already looking forward to the 2024 event and what will be taking place then. Special shout out of love to my super-team and to everyone who helped along the way. It is not in the Finnish mentality to brag, but I will go out of my way and proudly say that the markets in Norway, Sweden and England have been opened and we have already got partners from abroad for this first event! If someone had predicted this to me a year ago, I would have turned on my heels and laughed at the impossibility. The desire to further expand the market to a global scale has grown and strengthened along the way. Lapland, with its international flights and hospitality capacity, is the right place for a global event, and those multi-billion investment projects are of course of interest to anyone. I have often said that Lapland is like its own beautiful bubble, the rest of Finland is relatively unaware of the potential that lies in the north. Broad-based cooperation is the key to success, as well as strengthening corporate social responsibility. We are taking steps towards new territories also next year and I am more than happy that the brilliant Naomy Hyvönen will be part of our team in the future and we will open up Germany, Austria, Kenya and African markets. The Nordic countries fell into my lap somewhat by accident, as partners were already found last year and now the cooperation agreement with the Norwegian ICE Innovations Festival in December warms like a cup of hot chocolate and a doughnut on the ski trail. Workshops, programme content and theme are being fine-tuned right now and partnership agreements will be made from January onwards. We are looking for 2-3 companies as main partners for next year. The latest plans for 2024 include a new venue in Levi. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an important topic as we aim to make the event free to the public. Sustainability and how green values bring results, and women in business will also be taken into account. The day of the event will be moved to World Cup Friday and the workshop day will be on the previous day. All of this depends ofcourse if we get enough partners to make Kipinä Levi 2024 happen. Thinking about different strategies, how to get from A to Z and passion, keeps me going, so let's keep going. I think Elon Musk's latest book is brilliant and is about what business should be, a playful competition. Here in the dark north, people walk around frowning and being dead serious day after day, is that necessary? What reward do we Finns get for such? Do we have to be so dead serious about every aspect of our work? Shall we try to enjoy the journey a little more next year? It would be good to remind ourselves from time to time that we are not going to live here forever. Make your dreams come true now, not tomorrow or next year. In an average scenario, the responsibilities, budgets and tasks carried by working age people are relatively small by global standards. If you let you really think about it, imagine the scale of the universe, the globe is just a particle of dust and the time we live in now is a blink of an eye. There is no mistake you can make, if you do things with common sense and with good intentions, that is so big that it is worth getting grumpy and stressed about. The brave sometimes succeed, that could be a glimmer of hope for someone! In many cases, worries are pointless now and in the grave, the importance is only as great as you allow them to be. The best thing you can give yourself next year is to overcome your fear of failure. Be as brave as you ever can and perhaps later in life you will be glad you dared. I was especially reminded from Elon Musk's new book, of the time when the entrepreneurs, Musk and a friend (whose name I can't remember now), were in competition with each other to see who would run out of money first and yes, even Musk got in a tight spot and ran out of money. He too has made bad decisions, alternating between bad and good management, product development has taken a big hit, but has been corrected. Entrepreneurship is about persistence. The roller coaster of responsibility and decision-making continues regardless of wealth, as long as there is work to be done. Gratitude must not be forgotten. From a book called "Six substances that will change your life" I recall a good piece of advice, for every negative and critical thought about yourself, come up with 3 positive thoughts or praises. I think this advice could easily be extended to all negative thoughts. With these reflections, let's gratefully leap into the New Year and onto an exciting new journey called, Kipinä Levi 2024! Päämääränä on terve pohja liiketoiminnalle. Pääkumppaneita on etsinnässä 2-3 yritystä. Tapahtumapäivä siirtyy World Cup perjantaille ja workshop päivä on edeltävänä päivänä. Erilaisten strategioiden miettiminen, miten päästään A:sta Ö:hön ja intohimo, pitää itseäni kummasti otteessaan, joten jatketaan. Mikä on meidän Suomalaisten palkkio tällaisesta vakavamielisyydestä? Yrittäjyys on kestävyyslaji. Kiitollisuus on harrastuksista parhain. Kirjasta nimeltä ”Kuusi ainetta ainetta jotka muuttavat elämäsi” jäi mieleen hyvä neuvo, jokaista negatiivistä ja kriittistä ajatusta itseäsi kohtaan, keksi 3 positiivista ajatusta tai kehua. Käännät näin aktiivisesti omaa mieltä positiivisemmaksi. Mielestäni tämän ohjeen voisi helposti yleistää kaikkeen negatiiviseen ajatteluun. Näillä ajatuksilla, kiitollisena loikataan uuteen vuoteen ja kohti uutta jännittävää matkaa nimeltä, Kipinä Levi 2024! Erica Roiko Founder & CEO Kipinä Event Oy
